This three-part series was created by the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) and features Cane River native, Elvin Shields as he recalls life on Cane River during the mid to late 20th century. Cane River National Heritage Area received permission from NCPTT to share these videos.
In part one of this three-part series, former sharecropper, Elvin Shields recalls his life on the plantation. He goes on to discuss daily activities, chores, and jobs of a tenant farmer and their family.
In part two of this three-part series, former sharecropper, Elvin Shields recalls what life was like after moving off of the plantation into segregated areas in the city of Natchitoches. He discusses the typical roles and jobs of the time and how they translated that from the plantation to the city.
In the final installation of this three-part series, former sharecropper, Elvin Shields recalls the process of cotton production on the plantation from planting to shipping. Mr. Shields also shares some personal stories from his childhood.
