NATCHTITOCHES – Cane River National Heritage Area, Inc. (CRNHA) is pleased to announce the re-installation of the Fort Selden Historical Marker located on Highway 6 East, just south of the Grand Ecore Bridge. The original sign was erected in the 1980s by the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism (CRT) based upon the research of local historian, Henry “Buddy” V. Maggio.

Over the years, the historical marker program has been altered and CRT no longer funds the fabrication and installation of the markers. Unfortunately, this shift coincided with the disappearance of the Fort Selden marker. Eager to see the sign reinstated, Maggio approached CRNHA in the Spring of 2015 and alerted the organization to the missing status of the historical marker. “The historical importance of Fort Selden and Mr. Maggio’s sincere interest in seeing the sign restored was enough motivation for us to have this sign reinstated” remarked CRNHA Director of Communications, Rebecca Blankenbaker. “Although brief, Fort Selden’s influence in American Military History marked a definite step in the westward expansion of the national frontier. Its recognition will certainly be an added bonus for locals and travelers on the Cane River National Heritage Trail,” Blankenbaker continued.  

The Louisiana Historical Marker program commemorates facts, persons, events, and places prominently identified with the history of the nation, state, or region. Historical markers are privately sponsored and funded by sponsors. Any individual or group may nominate a location or occasion of historical interest for historical marker commemoration.
